About Us

Join in the hours of fun you can have at "Mount Gwynne".

"Mount Gwynne" was a nick-name given to Gwynne Ski Hill by our Canadian Ski Patrol volunteers. They would go every winter to a competition at the mountains and very often won the competition or came very close to winning. No other teams that were competing knew where our little ski hill was at. So we became known as "Mount Gwynne - Home of the 8 second ride". Im sure you can figure out "the 8 second" ride part. Join in the hours of fun you can have at "Mount Gwynne".

We are open during the winter season, when the abundance of snow permits. We do not have any snow making equipment, so we rely on natural snow.

Map

The hill has a north face and is 10km east of Wetaskiwin on Hi-way 13, or 20km west of the junction at Hi-way 21 & Hi-way 13 West of Camrose. The ski area is in the heart of Gwynne Valley, at the south end of coal lake. When you drop down into the valley on Hi-way 13, turn south RR230 (right after the bridge coming from Wetaskiwin). Go to the first stop sign (1km), turn west following the old Hi-way. Just before the Hi-way starts up the valley, turn left (south). Looking to the south you will be able to see the lifts and the runs of the ski hill. Follow this windy road, across the rail-way tracks, across another bridge and the hill is the first left.

We have a rope tow, which runs fast to get the snowboarders up the hill quickly. This rope runs up the side of our terrian park. The main T-bar goes to the top of the hill and has many runs coming down from the top. There is a mid point, which you can get off if you dont want to go to the top. The new T-bar to the east is for the advanced skier and when finished, it will be a challenge for the experienced skier.

Come in and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or lunch in our cafateria.

Most of the work that is done at the Gwynne Ski Hill is volunteer work. If you are interested in helping, you can contact the Ski Hill at 780-352-3515 and find out what projects are being worked on. This goes on throughout the summer. Clearing of runs, maintenance of buildings ie. painting, fixing lighting on the hill and lift matienence is done during the warm weather.

We have a base of trained volunteeers that willing donate their time and skills, to patrol the runs during the ski season and give first aid to those that may get hurt. To these men and women we are very grateful.

One of the ways that we are able to keep our lift tickets and rental fees low, is because of all the volunteer work that the surrounding communities give to the hill. The hill is operated by the Wetaskiwin Ski Club and has a lease on the land from the owner. Thank you Conrad . We also want to thank Al Arner, who was the man with the vision for this hill. With his love for sports, desire to help young people and initiative to start a project like the ski hill, he has given this generation an affordable and easily accessible sport.

For a day or just a couple of hours and only a 10 minute drive from Wetaskiwin, Gwynne Valley Ski Area has a lot to offer.

You are welcome to come and join us any evening (Tuesdays and Fridays) or any Saturday or Sunday. Even if you do not have any equipment and would like to learn, we have skis, snowboards and snow blade rentals for all ages and sizes of people.

There is a group of people who are also trained and licensed to teach those of you, the how-toos and what-nots of skiing and snowboarding.

We have a walking path beside the ski hill call, "Chicadee Trail". At the bottom of the switch back is a parking lot. If you walk 2/3rd's of the way up the power line cut-line, on the west side is a trail along the valley. This trail goes for about 2 to 3 miles on the south bank of the valley towards Wetaskiwin. Lots of birds and wildlife can be seen on this walk-about. From the directions to the hill at the top of this article, when you cross the last bridge, the parking lot is straight ahead about 500 ft.

Winter is a great time of year, so come outside and enjoy the beauty, meet new friends and get exercise at the same time. Summer is a great time to also come and walk the walking trail.

Please don't come into the ski hill area outside of regular operating hours. Cattle are found grazing the hill during the spring, summer and till late in the fall.

We are a non-profit club. We meet every second wednesday per month (not July or August). All members of the Wetaskiwin Ski Club are welcome to attend meetings . Meetings are at 7:30pm at the Chalet.
